Hot Springs was originally called Warm Springs, named after the pools of water built for a lavish resort in the area in 1882. When the “Warm Springs Hotel” burned down in 1884, another hotel named Mountain Peak was built and a higher temperature spring was found near it. The town was named Hot Springs in honor of this spring in 1886.
Hot Springs is also known for a stop on the Appalachian Trail, which runs down Bridge Street, climbing the mountain on either side of the river.
